Autorun.inf for data cd/dvd

Do you have a data cd or dvd and want a certain file to run when the disc is placed in the cd/dvd drive?

There is a special case for software data cds (or dvds).
Data cd/dvd makers (software makers etc): This is how to make and Autorun.inf if you prefer to do it yourself. This file would be at the root of your disc data content.
To make an autorun.inf file, open notepad, and place the two lines

[autorun]
OPEN=YourSetupFile.exe

Then save this file as autorun.inf This file is saved at the root of the cd/dvd (not in a subfolder)

If you burn all your files to a test cd/dvd and you've correctly written the autorun.inf file, the file you named in the OPEN variable should start when the disc is placed in your drive.

You can specify files other than an .exe file such as a web page like Open=explorer.exe startup.htm

Why does my master audio cd copy work on all my CD players (even those in my computer or car) but the manufactured discs work on my PC and on only some of my cd players and not in my car?

To make an exact copy of your audio cd, you would have had to send it to us for setup where we make an exact copy.

If you just copied mp3 files or wav files into a zip file, and your trepstar.com project is set as a data cd project, it's not made as a true audio cd. Computers and modern cd players, car cd players, and even dvd players and game systems like ps3 or xbox 350 will correctly interpret your mp3 and wav files as music and play them because they are "smart" enough to read them as data cds.. However, only a true audio CD format can be read in all cd players (from the past when mp3 files were not even invented yet). There are numerous software programs like NERO (google it) that will help you master an audio CD.

Why does my audio CD or video DVD have skip, pop, or glitch during playback, or customers are saying it's a bad disc or won't play or work properly?

Normally, this happens if there is a skip/glitch/pop in your master or the defect was introduced when you copied it for us to import/setup, or during the time you prepared the files for upload to Trepstar.com This can be due to a scratched or dirty original, cheap blank media you used for your copy, or a CD/DVD drive that may be failing or having trouble reading parts of your disc. You can confirm and compare whether the problem is with your original source dvd/cd or one we made. Do a "scan" of each sector of your original disc and do the same for ours. If every sector is readable, then there is no manufacturing or product media defect. Use a free software utility such as NERO ScanDisc (google it) and test this. We manufacture an exact replica of your original source disc so likely, the problem is with the master. If there were problems with the original, or during the copy step when you made a disc for us to import, or when you made the zip files, our system has no choice but to duplicate that.

It's up to you to make sure you send us a clean copy of your master for setup, or you use a clean copy and are very careful when you make the .iso file for your dvd, or the .gi file for your audio cd.

If you prepared the files (zipped up a .iso file, gi file or mp3 files and uploaded to the server) you should download them from the server, unzip them, and make a cd or dvd from those files. Then carefully test THAT fully because that's what we burn. We burn exactly what you give us.

We provide a free website to upload your project with a free credit limit so you can purchase a test copy without paying anything up front. When you receive that copy, you must test it in as many devices as possible. We do not finesse or modify or author content in any way. We copy what you give us so make sure you understand what you're giving us for duplication and manufacture.

If you have customers that tell you their disc "wont play" or "has problem xxx", it may be a flaw in your original OR possibly, a manufacturing flaw, but that is quite rare.

Normally, manufacturing defects are rare. We burn each disc using computers and robots (fully automated) and after each burn, the computer does a "verify step" that reads every bit of the information again, and compares that to the original files. The disc is rejected and nothing is printed on the disc surface if any single bit is wrong. We throw those away. In some rare cases, the verify may make a mistake which happens in less than one out of every 1,500 discs made (based on data from our internal numbers). We do not offer refunds unless the customer clearly tells us exactly what's wrong, at which part of the disc and then they must send us the defective disc in the mail, so we can check it. We have found customers either don't know what they are doing, the disc was scratched or smudged by them and they did not clean it properly, the disc was authored (by you) improperly. We want the disc back so we can tell if it's truly an error, or just a scratch or smudge on the disc vs. a manufacturing error. If we find the error is truly with the disc, we will send a free replacement. Normally, to save you and your customer the hassle, you are free to simply order a new copy for your customer again. If you have many customers telling you they have problems, it's because your master was defective or not tested and compatible with the most common devices.

Why does the DVD play on some DVD players and not on others?

There are a few reasons:

1 Some older DVD players will not play duplicated DVDs or not play DVD-R media (which is what we use). This might occur 1/2% of the time (1 on 200 dvd players) as of 4/12/2011 when this article was written. As time goes by, less and less dvd players have this issue.

2) Your DVD must be authored properly and not include any extra folders or files such as pdf, text, or other content. Your master dvd may have played in YOUR dvd player at home, or on a computer but that does NOT mean it's truly compatible with ALL dvd players. Learn more about "dvd authoring".

3) The total max combined bit rate should not exceed 6.4 megabits per second.

4) Some dvd players can not properly reproduce MPEG audio. Its best to author your DVD using Dolby Digital (AC-3).

5) In some countries the video format is PAL and in others it is NTSC. Make sure you author a DVD for both regions, or remove region coding (google it) when you author your dvd

If you sent us your disc for import/setup, we make an exact image file of what you sent us. If you did not carefully verify and test your disc, or used cheap blank media, our system has no choice but to duplicate any flaws on the disc. It's up to you to test what you send us and what we produce and send to you before you order lots of quantity for other people.

Set Volume Name

You can now edit your project and specify the volume name.

The volume name is shown when you view the cd/dvd on a computer. For example, on a PC, if you open Windows Explorer, the "Volume Name" is shown next to the drive letter. In the example below, the volume name was set to "A1Monitor" in the TrepStar.com project file.

Historically, our system just set the volume name to a mixture of your project title and it could never be changed.

Edit your TrepStar.com project, scroll to near the bottom, and type in the volume name of your choice. Only 11 Alpha-Numeric characters are allowed- this is a limit of how computers store and display the volume information.

Refresh your project

Refresh your project to make sure we get the latest version of your files.

After changing your project, click the refresh button. Normally, our system catches your changes and the refresh is automatic, but just to be safe, you're allowed to refresh the project yourself. This causes us to delete all local files and download them all again. Normally, if a small item changes in your project, we do automatically download that changed file. However, in this case it may not have worked properly, or perhaps we had extra discs or artwork left over from when we tested the project.

It is NOT a good idea to change an old project dramatically into a completely different project. It is much better to create a copy, or new project, then delete the old project. If the refresh process does not work properly, or we had extra stock on hand from previous orders, that product will ship first. Normally, we make exactly what we need to ship, but sometimes we make extra which we use for the next order. If you dramatically change your project, we may end up sending the old project disc/artwork to a new customer.

Modifying a project is NOT the way to change to a completely different new project. It's meant as a way to update changes to the SAME project.

Now add Hard Returns printed on the customer invoice

Historically, hard returns (or html) were not allowed in the special text area. This special text is printed on the customer invoice.

You have up to 500 characters to print specific instructions about your product. This is set by editing your project and entering your "special text".

This text is printed on the invoice the customer receives with their package.

You can also provide this special text at order time. In other words, you can give each customer specific instructions. This can be used for registration/unlock codes or a personal message.

You are now able to use hard returns in this special text. If it goes over 10 lines, it will be cut off and not printed on the customer invoice so be careful.

Login, edit your project, add a few hard returns. Then, use the view feature to look at how the special text will be displayed on the customer invoice.

Also, click the recent order button. The special text used for that customer invoice is displayed in a popup window (look for the ? in the price column)

Login Area Speed Improvements

Speed improvements to the login area. This will be most noticed for users with many previous orders or many projects. In addition, recent orders and search features were slow to initialize --- this has been fixed.

We also made improvements so the recent orders button is much faster, and shows orders sorted by date descending. The last 30 days worth of orders are shown. The old way sorted by project first, so if you had a lot of projects, you had to scroll down a lot to find the most recent order.

General search is faster as well. Users with a lot of projects will notice the most improvement.

Administration area layout changes

We've recently lowered prices across the board. We've matched prices so dvds are now the same price as cds (dvds used to cost more). Also, we've really lowered prices for multi-quantity orders. Historically, our business has been focused on clients that need 1 item (quantity = 1) shipped to their individual customers at order time. We realize you sometimes need a larger quantity (maybe you need to order 50 units for a reseller). Our prices have NOT been very good in those situations. We now offer the low per unit cost regardless of quantity instead of charging a fulfillment fee for each item in the order (this means it's about $2.00 less for each item you order).

If you need 500 or more units, you could find a better price out there, but our goal is still to provide the lowest cost at any quantity, especially if you're only ordering a single item sent to a single customer.

It's hard to keep prices this low. Word of mouth advertising really helps to get new clients to our site which will keep us doing this for years to come.

How do I make and exact copy of my Audio CD.

This is a confusing topic. If you have an audio CD mastered just the way you like it, and you want us to copy it exactly, you need to make an image file of your CD, or you can send it to us in the mail and we'll do it for you. Learn More about our $10.00 easy setup

If you're not concerned about making an exact copy, but just want it to work on audio cd players (which will also work on all computers, all car cd players, and most dvd players), you can simply zip up your .mp3 or .wav files and use that to make the disc. This works perfectly well, but some people want to have an exact copy to preserve cd-text information already burned on their original cd master. If you do not know what this is, you probably don't need to make an exact cd copy. To learn more about setting up your basic project for audio cds, look at our video Audio CDs (on trepstar.com)

To make an exact CD copy, you have two choices:

1) If you want us to do this for you, we charge a one time $10.00 per disc setup charge. Learn More about our $10.00 easy setup

2) Or, download and purchase Roxio Creator 2010 or later to make a .gi image (global image) file. Get Roxio Creator

You will make a .gi file (details below)
You will zip that file up using winZip or winRar
You will upload that .zip file to your web server
You will login to TrepStar.com and update your project. Set the download URL to the .zip file you've uploaded to a web server.

How to make a .gi file using Roxio.

1) Launch the program while your CD is in your CD player
2) In the left column (2nd button) click Data/Copy
3) There is a Create, Backup and Copy section on this screen. Go to the Copy section and choose "Copy Disc to Image"
4) Copy From: should select your cd/dvd drive that has the CD you want to make the copy of.
5) Choose the Image location: Browse to somewhere on your computer where you will store this .gi file so you can zip it up later. We suggest making the folder c:\GIFiles and place them all there
6) You'll want to click the browse button to pick your c:\GIFiles folder or whatever you decide.
7) Before you click the save button, give your file a name such as "Disc1".
8) Save as type: must be set to "global image (*.gi)"
9) Once you click save, click the green right arrow button to start the process.
10) Once finished you've made an exact digital copy of your cd.

To finish setting up your project, you will zip that .gi file up, upload that zip file to your server, then specify that URL in your TrepStar.com project. Important: Your project should be set as a Data CD even though it will end up to be an audio cd. This is because the data from the .gi image file is used to burn instead of mp3 or .wav files. In the end, it will be a true audio cd, but the project must be set to data cd so we burn it correctly.

Note: .gi files are for audio cds. .iso files are for DVDs or Data CDs that are not audio cds.

How do I create or check CD-Text on my audio cds

If you provide a .gi image file of your cd, we copy the data bit for bit (exactly). This includes your cd text and title text.

If you provide a zip file with .mp3 files or .wav files, we burn them using your project name as the album title and your file names as the track names.

CD Text can be used to populate internet databases that programs like iTunes and Windows Media player use to identify an album.

Can I make a project with dvds and cds or audio cds combined (a mixed media type multi-disc set)?

Yes
1) create a project

2) change it to a dvd project by clicking the options button within the login area after you make the project.

3) Make it a multi-disc set by editing the project and clicking the link ("make this a multi disc set") near the burn files URL entry field. There is a link there that expands the project form.

4) Enter the urls for each disc.

5) You can choose the type of each disc in a multi-disc set. There are radio buttons that let you choose between audio cd, data cd, and dvd. These buttons are right next to the download URL for each discs burn files.

6) Save the project.

7) Click options and go through the packaging and setup steps to pick the correct packaging and options.

How do I cancel an order?

We can't cancel an order if we've already made the disc and printed postage. You have a limited time to delete or modify orders once they are placed.

Login, click the recent orders button. You will be able to modify and delete orders if available. You may delete within 15 minutes or so.

You may edit as long as we have not yet printed postage. We print postage often during business hours, so please delete/modify orders right away if you see mistakes.

How do we ship? By USPS, Fedex, UPS, DHL, or what?

We ship USPS first class, priority, and express mail only. If one of your customers requires a different shipping method, please order the product to your site, and ship it to your customer from there. Better yet, order a few of your products sent to you, then you'll have them on hand to send to customers for special cases.

If you specify an incorrect address for a customer, we charge a fee to correct this. Normally, you are not contacted.

This may involve emailing the customer if you provided an email at order time. We ask them to confirm their address. We then fix the address and send the product.

There two situations where this can happen.

1) We can't print postage because the address is too invalid. In this case, we notify the customer by email. If we can't contact them, we contact you. We charge a $2.00 fee for this.

2) We get a returned package from the post office. In this case, we also notify the customer by email. If they reply with a new address, we reship the package. If not, we contact you. In this case, we submit a new order. In essence, you are billed twice for the shipment. We sent it twice, we paid postage twice etc.

Refunds, returns, broken, cracked, never received, replacements policy

Refunds:

We do not offer refunds if we've already made the disc or printed postage. You have about 10 minutes to delete an order if it's a single product order for a single disc set with quantity set to 1. We actually make the disc but we still offer you 10 minutes for delete in this case. If you do not see a delete button, no delete is offered. NONE of our competition offers any kind of delete or edit capability.

Also, you have about 1 hour to edit the basic address information once an order is placed. You can not change quantity, shipping method, or country. All of that would effect the cost of the order (billing issues). The modify feature is for simple editing such as fixing a street address, zip code, or to add an apartment# etc.

To check on whether you can edit or delete, login to your account, and click the recent orders button near the top of the page. You will be able to delete or edit orders from there. If you do not see a modify or delete button, the feature has expired or is not available in that situation.

Broken or damaged:

If the customer claims the package was damaged in any way (we usually get an email from them), we send a replacement at no charge to you if your product is packaged in a cd or dvd case. We do not require the customer to send anything back to us. If you use our most economical 1 oz mailer, we do what's called a resend disc order where we give you 2.00 off. Thus, what normally would cost about $4.00 to resend only costs you $2.00. The 1oz mailer does break more often (1 in 150 or so) so consider this when deciding how to package your product.

Returns:

If a customer refuses a package, or returns it to us, or the post office could not deliver for some reason, we notify you by email in case you want to offer them a refund or login to TrepStar and order again with a different address. We do not offer you any refunds. We do not give you any credit for returned inventory. it takes MUCH longer to open packages, look up the publisher, send you the email, etc. than it does to make and send it in the first place. None of our competition does this. Most just throw the returned packages away, with no notification to you, and leave you to deal with the angry customer,

Product Never Received:
If the customer never received the product, we ship it to them again at no cost to you IF and ONLY IF you ordered with tracking. We require the customer wait 3 weeks (USA addresses) and 5 weeks (international addresses) before we issue a resend. If the customer ordered priority or express mail to a USA address, this includes tracking, but we ask them to wait at least 7 business days. If the customer ordered to an INTL address, the only full tracking offered is Express mail. If you did not ship Express INTL, you will need to order again as we do not reship at our cost unless tracking clearly shows the package never arrived -- Tracking is only available on Express mail for INTL addresses.

When a customer replies to us by email that their package has not yet arrived, we check when it was sent and if it's within the most common worst case time-frame, we send them a "please be patient email". Many times, they reply to that email saying "...forget it, I just got the package..."

Broken packages, or customers that complain the "disc doesn't work" are a normal cost of doing business when shipping cd and dvd products. You can choose to refund, or resend to your customer based on your own return/refund policy. We simply do the shipping for you at very low cost, and do not offer refunds. You are the retailer. You have to factor in return/refund costs.

Do you burn dual layer dvd discs?

No. As of 11/15/2010, we burn only single layer DVD-5 4.7GB DVDs

You can use a dvd copy software like DVD Cloner to

1) Split your DVD-9 (dual layer DVD) into two DVD-5 (single layer DVD)s. You can then make a 2 dvd set on our site. This saves you trouble of re-authoring your DVD

or

2) Compress your DVD-9 so it fits on a DVD-5 single layer DVD. The DVD Cloner software allows you to choose the compression levels, and remove any extra features you may not want or need. Compression does affect the video quality, so the final product is not exactly like your original. Depending on the circumstance, this may be acceptable to you.

The reason burn on demand fulfillment companies do not use dual layer discs is because they are prone to error. If you really need your DVD-9 dual layer DVD disc replicated exactly, you need to search for a "dvd replicator". Normally you would have to purchase 1000 units or more to make this cost effective (probably get the price down to $1.75 per unit that way).

No. We don't have any minimum monthly maintenance fees.

However, we're in business to make money. If you only plan to take one or two orders of your project cd/dvd, we mayl not approve the project.

Our service is not optimal for someone to publish a disc once. It takes too long to download, store, and test the first disc made. However, we may discuss with you (by phone or email) billing you a $50.00 setup fee that would make it reasonable for us to spend the initial setup time and testing for a short run (just a few copies of a single title). This might make sense if you were making a video wedding DVD and were charging your client a large amount of money, thus the $50.00 setup fee would be worth it to you.

This service is for people who plan to make one or more projects and sell multiple copies of each on a repeated basis.

If you stop using our service, we expect you to pay your final bill, but we do not charge any non use or monthly service fees.

If you do not take an order at least once per month, we reserve the right to delete the project.

We will delete projects when no orders have been placed in 6 months.

A true audio CD is 70 minutes maximum. If your recordings are more minutes than that, either break them down into multiple disc sets.

Better yet, make high quality mp3 files and make an mp3 data cd (pick data cd in options -- this is the default for new projects).

Most newer dvd players, game systems (xbox, ps3), cd players, bluray players, car cd players can read mp3 data cds as audio. You can get hours of audio on an mp3 data cd.

If you must have true audio cds, we still recommend converting them to mp3 files (create a zip file of each disc such as 01track1.mp3, 01track2.mp3...) Remember, the total size for each audio cd must be less than 70 minutes.

We are very price competitive.

We want you to shop the competition. Once you have, please consider this: The first few orders we get from a new customer cost us the most money. Why? Because there can be problems setting up the project. We have to manually approve the project and test the first discs made. This is often the time we need to field your customer support phone calls and email.

In other words, it costs us a lot to get a new client in terms of labor, support, setup, not to mention advertising and time spent making sure our site ranks well on the search engines.

We would go out of business if we were not price competitive. The last thing we want is to incur the cost of getting a new client (we lose money during this phase), just to have them leave for our competition if they were to find out our prices were too high.

Your most economical method for sending a package with tracking is USPS priority mail (about 6 dollars).

No one will find your download files since we do not publish them.

A data cd can contain any kind of file, wav, mp3, or documents (.pdf for example). However, if you want the music to play in any cd player (like the car), you only include mp3 or wav files in your zip file which we extract, and then burn as a music cd which is a special format.

If you need files other than .wav or .mp3, then you need to make a data cd which will NOT play in any cd player (but will play in computers).

To do this, click the Add button to create a project. The default is a data cd. Then click the Options button. This wll give you disc options as well as package and printed graphics options.

No. There are no account or project setup fees, provided you use our automated online system.

There is no setup fee for the first 10 projects you create. However, if you need more than that, we charge a small $1.99 data storage, download, and setup fee. It costs a lot to store, test, and manage many projects that have few orders each. Most customers have only one or two titles (projects) so this fee only affects a small number of our clients who have a LOT of titles.

If you plan to make DVD projects, or you just want it simple and painless and want us to do it for you, simply send us your disc (include your project# printed on the disc). If your DVD is larger than 2GB, we need you to send it to us via us mail. It's not practical to upload and download 2-4GB of data.

DVD setup fees, and other custom support fees are $10 per disc. This is a one time setup fee.

How do we upload files to TrepStar.com cdDVDfulfillment?

In most cases you take the files that are to go on the cd or dvd and zip them up (winzip.com).

Once you have that zip file, you upload that to your web server. You also do the same for the graphic that's to be printed on the disc and any other printed graphics (such as dvd amaray case overwrap image)

From within the TrepStar.com project management area (www.TrepStar.com) you then specify the download url to your files (such as http://www.yourcompany.com/files/cd1.zip).

Once your project is approved, you may click the order button to create a new order. At that time, we download the files (usually only once) and burn them to the disc.

There are no minimum order requirements for CD or DVD fulfillment as long as you order once each 180 days. You can order as few or as many as you want.

There are no project setup fees for the first 10 projects when you use our free self service website.

If you have over 10 projects (10 different products you sell), there is a small $1.99 fee (to be paid later) for each project after that. This fee simply covers the cost to store the data, download the data, and test your new project. This is not normally a pricing problem for most customers because they plan to sell several copies to multiple customers.

First of all, we use only the highest quality DVD-R blank media to be compatible with most dvd players. However, even this means some users will NOT be able to play the dvd in every situation. DVD-R is compatible with approximately 99.5% of all dvd players, but of course this means 1 of 200 people may complain the dvd "won't play".

Make sure you inform your customer during the order process that they need a dvd player that can read DVD-R format and to have them check their owner's manual.

If you produce, or want to produce physical cds or dvds and have them sent to your individual customers, you need a manufacturing and fulfillment company. TrepStar.com cdDVDfulfillment is one of those companies.

Here are some common terms that may help you sort out whether you need a company like TrepStar.com or not.

1) Do you want 500-1000 cds or dvds sent to you so you can distribute them to people yourself? If so, you want to look for a duplication company. Google "cd duplication" for example. Duplicators burn the discs. The cost is more than if you needed 1000 or more, but the real cost with short run or small run jobs like this is the setup time. You're not paying so much for the actual cost of the materials, but more for the time/effort it takes to setup short run projects.

2) Do you want 1000 or more sent to you? If so, google "dvd replication". You really start to save if you need thousands or more. Replication is a word used to describe taking a master, making a glass master, and making lots and lots of copies. It takes several hours to setup the replication process. They use very expensive machines to do this (up to a million dollars each). Your unit cost really goes down when you need over 5000 units. Basically, you're paying a fixed cost for setup. After that, it costs virtually nothing to make that next 1000 units. For example, it may only cost 25 cents per disc in actual material costs including the dye printed on the disc surface etc. With each of these methods, what you are paying most for is labor.

3) Do have several titles, or only sell a few per day or week, and plan to send them to individual customers? If so, this is called just in time, or on demand cd or dvd fulfillment. There are plenty of fulfillment companies that can take any product you produce, take orders, and send them (fulfill the order) to your individual customers. What you want to do is create an account, add a project, and click the options button. Go through that setup wizard. This lets you pick options and see exact pricing for those options.

If you have a DVD, and only plan to sell a few copies of an individual title (a wedding DVD for example), that's OK, but we may choose to charge a $50.00 setup fee. We will discuss your project with you by phone or email before we would charge this fee. It takes a lot of time to download and store DVDs and a technician hand tests the first one that's made. If you end up submitting 20 orders or more, we can break even on this cost and will credit your account for the $50.00.
